Whooping Cough

Whooping Cough (Pertussis) is a bacterial infection of the lungs which is caused by a bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It is a very contagious disease which causes coughing with little or no fever. The coughing may be so severe that it leads to vomiting and aspiration.

This infection is usually begins with a cold and a mild cough and effects the respiratory tract and the lungs. After that the disease eventually converts to severe coughing and many persons make a whoop sound after the person breathes in after coughing. Initially when there was no vaccination available to cure whooping cough, almost three out of every four children who suffered from the disease, died. Now today the condition has improved a lot and only a few people suffer from whooping cough.

Causes of whooping cough

Whooping cough is usually caused by the bacteria named bordetella pertussis or simply b.pertussis and is one of the highly contagious bacterial infections known.

Symptoms of whooping cough

  •  Sore throat.
  •  Mild dry cough.
  •  Sneezing.
  •  Tears.
  •  Tiredness.
  •  Loss of appetite.
  •  Night cough.
  •  Vomiting.
  •  Retching.
  •  Nosebleeds.
  •  Diarrhea.

Home Remedies for Whooping Cough

  1. Garlic is one of the most effective remedies for whooping cough. The syrup of garlic should be given in doses of five drops to a teaspoon, two or three times a day, for treating this condition. It should be given more often if the coughing spells are frequent and violent.
  2. Ginger has proved beneficial in treating whooping cough. In 1 cup of Fenugreek decoction, add 1 tsp of fresh ginger juice and some honey for taste. You can prepare the Fenugreek decoction easily at home. In 250 ml water, boil 1 tsp of Fenugreek seeds till it reduces to half.
  3. Almond oil is valuable in whooping cough. Five drops of almond oil should be mixed with ten drops each of fresh white onion juice and ginger juice, and taken thrice daily for a fortnight. It will provide relief.
  4. Take 1 tablespoon of honey, 1/4 tablespoon of tumeric powder and mix them properly. Now you can take this mixture, 1 tablespoon each day.
  5. Take a onion and make its juice. Now a cough syrup can be prepared by combining raw onion juice with honey. Let it remain for 3-4 hours. Now you can take 1 teaspoon of it daily.
  6. You must drink lots and lots of water everyday, 10-12 glasses of water are must for a normal person.
  7. Add a few drops of eucalyptus to a carrier oil and rub on your chest.
  8. Radish is another good curative for whooping cough. Prepare a cough syrup by mixing a teaspoon of fresh radish juice with an equal quantity of honey and salt as per the taste. Now this syrup can be taken three times daily.
  9. 1 tablespoon carrot juice and little amount of honey and warm water is very beneficial for treating whooping cough. You can take 1 tablespoon of this mixture several times a day.
